Taking it to the Street with Texting
If you live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, you’ve probably received the memo: soon the Toronto government will be fining texters who text while walking. Personally, I think it’s a ridiculous law to ban text walkers. It’s like the cigarette butts rule. According to the government, if you litter a cigarette on the ground in this city, you will be fined, up to $5000 I believe it was, if caught. So don’t get caught, I guess. Guess most people haven’t got caught, then. Well, maybe the government has dropped that law, I’m not so sure. The only thing I know is banning text walkers is on the news and people being fined for cigarette butt littering is not. Well, at least not on the news I watch or read.
I would love to see how the government deals with texters if they actually go ahead with this law. Apparently there are more deaths in Canada due to people being hit by cars. One of the reasons why could be because of so many people not looking where they were going and being hit. Distraction: TEXTING. One girl CTV interviewed said that she almost crashed into a pole while texting. It’s like driving while texting, (which is also banned) you can’t focus on the road and your message too. And if you do, good for you, just don’t get caught by the police. Soon, people won’t be trying to focus on walking on the sidewalk or road and text at the same time but they will be focused on the road or sidewalk, while texting, while making sure a police cruiser isn’t driving by. God, who knew texting would become such a struggle. The point is, almost half the population of Toronto TEXTS WHILE WALKING! So soon we’re going to have half of Toronto fined and soon thrown in jail. Get ready to build bigger penitentiaries Toronto because half the city’s going to be in them.
Really, it’s a ridiculous rule. Even Rob Ford thinks so and I usually don’t support anything he does or says. Still, it’s true. If we ban text walkers, we’ll soon be banning people from doing other things that are distracting: talking on a cell phone while walking, talking to your child while pushing him or her or them in a stroller, reading while walking, (witnessed a girl doing just that today. POLICE, LOCK HER AWAY!) eating fries while walking, and hundreds of others.
Final words towards the government of Toronto,
GOOD LUCK.
